Slings and carriers can be used instead of a pram when going out but are also very useful to keep your baby close to you at home, while also freeing up your hands.

The different types of baby slings and carrierS

A wrap sling is a single piece of stretchy or woven fabric that is wrapped around you and your baby to secure them. They distribute your baby’s weight evenly across your body to prevent back and shoulder pain and you can experiment with a variety of carrying positions. The Moby Evolution and Ergobaby Aura are popular wrap slings. The Close Caboo is a type of stretchy wrap, which is more structured to make it easier to use.

A ring sling is worn over one shoulder, diagonally across the body. It comprises of one piece of soft woven fabric with two rings sewn at one end, which the other end is threaded through. They are quick to put on and get off and are great for breastfeeding. They are also easily adjustable and can be used from newborn to toddler. However, they don’t distribute your baby’s weight evenly so may become uncomfortable if worn for long periods or when your child gets bigger.

A pouch sling is fabric sewn to create a pocket for your baby that is worn over one shoulder. They are compact to store and quick and easy to take on and off. They generally are not adjustable though and the same one might not fit both parents.

A buckled carrier (also called a soft structured carrier) is a padded carrier with buckles and adjustable shoulder and waist straps. They are the most popular type of carrier to buy in the UK and are very secure and easy to use as no tying or wrapping is required. They often come with a newborn insert and can be used in a number of different positions.

A Meh Dai is an Asian-style carrier that is similar to a buckled carrier but instead of buckles, it has straps that you tie around your waist and shoulders. It can be worn on the front, hip or back depending on the age of your baby. The highly adjustable straps ensure a comfortable, even weight distribution.
