HOW DO YOU CHILDPROOF A DOOR?

Doors can harm small children by trapping their fingers in the hinge or handle side when they close or slam. You may also want to keep a child out of a room for their own safety, which becomes harder when they learn to use the door handle.

Six ways to childproof a door

1. Door pinch guards

These are pieces of foam placed on the handle side of a door, which keep the door slightly open. This means they can’t get their fingers trapped on the handle side if the door slams and also prevents a child who can’t open handles from getting trapped in a room.

2. Door finger guards

These also keep a door slightly ajar and stop it from slamming but also prevent little fingers from being trapped in the hinge side and the handle side. They are placed over the top hinge and some just need to be repositioned rather than removed to close the door fully.

3. Door stops

A door stop will prop a door open to save it from slamming. It’s usually a wedge that is placed under the door. This makes it easier to be removed by small children.

4. Door straps

This will not stop fingers from being injured. It’s a strap attached to both the door (handle side) and frame to restrict how far it opens. This could be very useful if there is a room which you want your pet to enter for their food/water/litter tray but not your child. They are also good for restricting access but also keeping a room aired.

5. Door handle locks

These are for locking internal doors. You can get them for lever handles and knob handles.

6. Key guards

If you have a door lock with a key kept in it, this is placed over the top to prevent a child from tampering with it.

How to childproof a front door

  • If possible, keep it locked from the inside (and the key out of reach)

  • Install or use a security chain or a deadbolt.

  • Use a lock for a level or knob handle.

  • Restricting access to the area where the front door is by using a safety gate.
