WHAT IS A PREGNANCY SUPPORT PILLOW?

Sleeping well at night can become increasingly difficult with a growing bump. Pregnancy support pillows are designed to position and support you in the most comfortable way.

Do I need a pregnancy pillow?

It depends on how large your bump becomes and whether or not it makes sleeping difficult. A pregnancy pillow can take the strain off your hips and also help with blood circulation and heartburn.

As there is a link between back sleeping from the third trimester onwards and an increased risk of stillbirth, it’s recommended that you sleep on your side. Some research shows that sleeping on your left side may be preferable. So if you do tend to end up sleeping on your back, a pregnancy pillow will help keep you in a side sleeping position.

What features should I look out for?

  • Full body C and U-shaped pillows are the most common but are often very large so might not work if you are sharing a smallish bed. In which case, you may prefer a more compact wedge pillow that just supports one area.

  • Many have a longer lifespan as they double up as nursing pillows.

  • Look for what areas the pillow supports to check it meets your body’s needs.

  • Breathable, natural materials will be better if you are someone who gets very hot at night or will be heavily pregnant in the summer.

  • Removable and machine washable covers will make them much easier to keep clean.
