12 of the best Moses baskets, cribs and bedside cribs for newborns 2024

Baby in a basket

WHAT IS A MOSES BASKET?

A Moses basket is a small basket, often with handles, where your baby can sleep. They sometimes come with a stand.

Pros of Moses baskets:

  • They are light and usually have handles to carry them with you around your home.

  • Rocking stands are available to rock and soothe your baby.

  • The smaller surface area makes some babies feel much more secure.

  • They take up a lot less space in your bedroom.

  • They are easy to transport for overnight stays elsewhere.

ConS of Moses baskets:

  • They are quickly outgrown as they can usually only be used up until about 3-4 months. If you have a large baby, you may need another bed as early as six weeks. This also means that all the extras you may have needed to buy like a mattress, waterproof cover and bedding will also be outgrown in a short amount of time.

  • The small size means it’s possible that the Moro reflex may cause a baby’s arm to jerk out and hit the sides. This won’t hurt them but could wake them up. Swaddling would prevent this.

  • A baby used to a Moses basket may take some time to adjust to a bigger bed once it is outgrown.

Crib in a nursery

WHAT IS A CRIB?

A crib has bars or slats and often also has a rocking or gliding motion. They are smaller than a cot and larger than a Moses basket.

Pros of a crib:

  • They can be used until your baby is around 6 months so have a longer lifespan than a Moses basket.

  • The rocking motion may soothe your baby.

  • Babies can be seen easily through cribs with bars or slats.

  • Bigger than a Moses basket but more space-saving than a cot.

Con of a crib:

  • Not usually as portable as a Moses basket.

WHAT IS A BEDSIDE CRIB?

Also called a co-sleeper, a bedside crib is a small cot with a drop side so it can be attached to your bed for safe co-sleeping. They can usually also be used as a standalone crib. It’s recommended that they are used from birth until around six months.

Pros of bedside cribs

  • They make night feeds much easier as you don't have to keep getting out of bed.

  • It may encourage bonding to sleep so close to your baby.

  • They can often be inclined to help with reflux and colds and some can be rocked to soothe a baby.

  • Many are very portable and come with their own travel bag.
